Cindy’s Stats

In her own words

About Cindy Brummer

I began my professional career in television journalism, but I found my way to user experience design while working as the web producer for KVUE-TV in Austin. I freelanced and worked as an in-house web designer and developer for five years before founding Standard Beagle in 2012.

Education

I attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a double degree in Journalism and History.

I also earned a Masters degree in UX Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art; while I was there, I completed a design fellowship program through the Johns Hopkins Technology Innovation Center.

Community

I love being out in the community. In 2019 I founded UX in ATX, which is a global community of designers, and we host meetups every month. I also teach the UX/UI boot camp program through the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. So far I’ve graduated more than 250 students.

Publications

I love to write, so I’m honored to be a contributing author to the book “97 Things Every UX Practitioner Should Know,” published by O’Reilly.

My why

I started Standard Beagle for a few reasons.

  • Passion – I eat, sleep, and breathe UX. And I love working with our clients to make the experience better for their clients and patients.
  • Family – I wanted a job that would allow me flexibility to take off for my kids’ activities in the middle of the day.
  • Independence – I wanted to call the shots and get out of the crosshairs of the politics in an organization.

I’m most proud of

I would say I’m most proud of how I opened an agency that’s still running, despite not having gone to business school. When I first started, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. But, through humility and a curious mindset, I’ve learned an incredible amount, and I’m still learning every day.

What else am I proud of? I’m a USA Boxing Certified Coach and I get to coach boxing at the YMCA.

And I’m so proud of my kiddos — one of which is headed to Loyola Marymount University. Go Lions!
