Interview with the developer…

We have some new and as well as familiar faces here at Standard Beagle. And it’s the unique qualities of each of our team members that makes this a special place.

Each quarter, we’re introducing you to a team member so you can get to know them just a little better.

This month, meet Seth Jones.

What do you do (your role)?

I am the Lead Developer at Standard Beagle. My day to day is pretty diverse, but generally my time is spent writing code, working with junior developers and interns so that they are progressing in their coding journeys, and sitting in on client meetings, discussing the implementation of various initiatives and deliverables.

How long have have you been a developer?

I have been developing for around 6 years, but I started working at Standard Beagle in January of 2020, and stepped into a leadership role at the beginning of this year.

Why did you decide to become a developer?

Ever since I created my first website I’ve been hooked on development. Being able to create something from nothing has always been a feeling I have chased, although it began with playing jazz and writing music. I’ve always loved the creative process, and very few things bring me as much joy as watching something in your head come to life.

What do you enjoy about your work?

There’s truly never a dull moment. Being a web developer is awesome because things are always changing, and there’s always new, exciting things to learn. Aside from the above, stepping into a leadership role has been a great opportunity to grow as a developer and a mentor. Both of which are super important to me in my personal development. Not to mention, I’ve always enjoyed teaching others. Because the struggle of learning to code is still relatively fresh in my mind, I find it really fulfilling to ease that process for others.

What do you wish you could change?

Besides improving the output of my brain, I wish there were more hours in the day for me to learn and spread knowledge. I love to learn and teach, and if I could do it 24 hours a day I totally would.

Where are you from originally?

I grew up outside Williamsburg, VA in a town called Toano. If you’ve never been there, imagine plenty of funny colonial outfits, corn fields, cows, and livestock.

Favorite food?

I’ve got a penchant for things that are terrible for my health. Bring on the Whataburger and Dominos! If you catch me feeling particularly svelte, I enjoy cooking steaks (medium rare, of course) on lava stones, paired with a glass of Scotch or Merlot.

Favorite band?

This is one of those questions that doesn’t get easier with time. I’m super eclectic, but I’d have to say that the flavor of the year is the band Polyphia. Those guys are unreal.

One thing you’d like to share we don’t know about you?

My favorite song/album of all time is American Pie by Don McLean and I have the signed vinyl. To me, it’s one of those songs that gets better with age.
