Engineering mobile app development

React Native solution for building audits

Project for:

Blocpower

This project was to develop a mobile tablet application for a New York-based startup performing engineering audits for buildings to go solar.

Our mobile app development team created a React Native application using the iOS design system and JSON schema.

Expertise

Our scope included a short prototype project in React Native, using Android Material Design. Later, the prototype was expanded into a larger React Native app transformed for iOS.

Client

Blocpower is an organization based in New York, New York that employs solar and energy efficiency technology to help churches, nonprofits, and small businesses slash their energy costs.

Timeline

We worked on a tight timeline. The program kicked off in late August and needed to be complete by the end of September. The prototype was developed in one month, and the larger project for the iOS React Native app was completed in 3 months.

Challenge

Improve efficiency of engineering audits

As part of Blocpower’s program, engineers must perform an on-site energy audit that includes an extensive assessment of a building’s energy usage. But this was at a cost.

Engineers could spend an entire day doing audits. And with up to three engineers auditing buildings at a time, this was a huge amount of spent resources.

They needed a way to speed up their work and streamline data collection.

Solution

Mobile app development for custom tool to collect data

The goal was for Standard Beagle to build an initial technology prototype that would set up the app architecture, navigation framework, data infrastructure and barebones UI so that Blocpower’s engineers could build out the app to further specifications.

The mobile app development team created an offline-first mobile app prototype that would address pain points with the auditing process.

Impact

The app improved productivity for engineers

Offline First

The engineers no longer need constant internet or phone connection — a challenge in New York because many buildings have poor service.

Reduction in engineer time spent on site as a result of the app

Data Extensible

The Blocpower team already had experience using React Web. So, building on React Native allowed Blocpower’s team to customize the UI more easily and add new data objects using technologies they were already familiar with, such as javascript and React components.
