Tunes from the Team: Playlist of Strong Women

We’re celebrating the strong Woman in our lives, and the strong women in our ears.

Some philosophers have said that girls “make the rocking world go round.” (Freddie Mercury) Other introspective souls have noted that “it’s a man’s world,” but then clarified that it would be “nothing without a woman or a girl.” (James Brown) But surely the most profound statement made regarding the world as a whole and a female’s position in it would be the call and response initiated by a queen, who asked “Who run the world?” The response is of course “girls”. The frontman of Queen, the king of soul, and Beyonce are all speaking to what we surely must all know. “We (women) run this mother.”

March is international Women’s month, and we have put together a list of some of our favorite female artists or female fronted bands. There is no possible way we could have every female artists we love on this list, so surely you will find some glaring holes. Feel free to message us with your favorite female artist if there are some we missed.

Standard Daniel recommends “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers. One of my favorite artists during this past year, Bridgers’ last album, 2020’s “Punisher” is both dark and light, introspective and hopeful, and hauntingly beautiful. Her music helped get me through a historically bad year. I also recommend anything by HAIM, a band composed of three sisters from Los Angeles. They make groovy vintage-tinged music with beautiful harmonies, while being completely original. Their performance at this year’s Grammy’s was amazing. Last, for when you’re feel chaotic, you can listen to “Infinity Guitars” by Sleigh Bells; the soundtrack to pep rally from some post-apocalyptic future that seems almost unavoidable at times.

Share these songs with the strong beautiful women in your life. I’ll see you next week.
