It’s Austin, TX where we keep it weird; not only in life, but in fashion too.
At SXSW 2017, this year, anything goes and went. I volunteered at the Information desk at the Austin Convention Center and got to see firsthand all the prevailing trends with their progression as the events changed from the Tradeshow and Interactive into Music and Gaming; and that was only at the Convention Center.
The Interactive and Tradeshow SXSW trends were taken over by bomber jackets, leather biker and denim jackets with flowers strewn across them, snapchat spectacles (very fun), rounded rim glasses, flashing LED glasses, solar hats, man buns, women top buns, and an overwhelming amount to blazers with tennis shoes (practicality ruled). The colors were vibrant and classic, depending on the person. Inside the tradeshow there was a large portion dedicated to Japan and its innovation; which brought many Japanese event participants and their eclectic take on fashion. The men either worn tighter black pants, or loose nomadic cut flowy pants. The theme seemed to be black, overall. Those that had the tight black pants tended to have a fashionable fitted blazer with a fun tee beneath; while the nomadic pants bunch, had long flowy jackets to match the ensemble with avant-garde hair.
As we moved into the music portion and gaming, the trends shifted to a more varied pallet. Some artists tended to stick to a black t-shirt and black pants, while others went all out with vivacious one pieces. Women wore a plethora of colorful shirts with tennis shoes. The rounded sunglasses and boater hats galore! Again, the leather jacket and denim with flowers presented itself; as well as black ankle boots and sneakers. The gamer enthusiast tended to wear funny t-shirts and zip up hoodies.
Stepping away from the Convention Center onto Rainey St. and Dirty 6th the styles got funky. The 70s are back, along with men’s Western inspired threads! Men and women dressed in bohemian overalls with large rounded sunglasses. Women with long flowing shirts and a midriff tank accompanied by a boat or floppy hat. Men tended to wear black ankle boots with an English semi-pointed toe. Lots of all black outfits for men with longer hair and hordes of mustachio style mustaches flipped at the ends. Now imagine if Hank Williams had a baby with a hipster—that is exactly the “Hipwester” you’d get. You would get a western button up with tight jeans, ankle boots, maybe event cowboy boots, un-combed larger hair and a smart phone.
But no matter what your SXSW 2017 style, the main event is having a fun and safe time. Be respectful and enjoy life. This is Austin, anything goes! Happy SXSW.
