What is Editing?
Editing is often split into two different categories: copy editing and content editing.
Copy editing is probably what you think of then you hear “editing”. It is making sure that the proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structures are used; while content editing is mainly concerned with, of course, the content or the writing. This identifies concerns regarding any inaccurate facts, bad structure, or plot holes. Generally, the content editing is performed first to correct any inconsistencies. Once the content is fully formed, it is followed by copy editing to correct any grammatical errors that may be present. However, some prefer to correct any mistakes as they see them and do both at the same time. Despite that, it is best to go over the copy one last time to ensure that no mistakes were overlooked.
Why Do I Need Editing?
Whether you know it or not, you edit every day. If you didn’t, everything that you said or wrote wouldn’t make any sense. From school and years of speaking and writing English, we have been conditioned to follow proper grammar. It is often something that we just do without thinking. However, it is also something that we do with great care and concern. In everyday conversation and casual writing, common grammar falls by the wayside. This inconsistency makes formal editing necessary in many situations. It is always highly recommended for any content that will be presented to the public, such as website or printed content. Whether your tone is formal or casual, grammatical mistakes in your writing can negatively impact the public’s view of your company.
When Should I Request Editing?
Editing is usually completed after the writing is completed. However, it does take time to read over and correct content. The longer and more complex the text, the longer it would take to edit, and both should be kept in mind when setting a timeline for content production.
