Without any feedback as to why the current solution doesn’t meet their goals, and no guarantee that a new solution will, changing the product could backfire. The A/B test can determine how effective the new solution will be.

How A/B testing works

With the original site as version A, and the new variation as version B, users are split into two groups. One group navigates using version A, while the other group tests on version B. After gathering data, the relevant statistics are compared. Generally, a more effective variation will have positive results. In this way the business can say with confidence that the increased conversion rates from the testing will be reflected upon launch. 

While A/B testing is an effective way to gain understanding of which page functions better, it’s still important to understand why

Following up testing with user research can pinpoint the “why” A or B works. Even if one version performs better than another, you still need to consider the overall usability of a page. If a design choice performs better according to metrics, but has a poor user experience, your results may vary over the long term.

In a controlled testing environment, users can explain the logic behind their browsing habits. Without qualitative data, you may lose key insights that explain why one version performs better. You may even lose information that could improve the variant’s quality or notice new trends in your user base. A variation may work well due to reasons unrelated to your hypothesis.

In the case of the small business, the group testing version B may say that the pop-up is effective because the copy offering benefits is enticing. Meanwhile, group A’s version does not have the same visual display to emphasize the great deals, and thus goes largely unnoticed. Overall, an A/B test backed by thorough research is the most effective way to meet your goals.
